After training in multiple dance styles growing up in Minnesota, Kaya’s focus on contemporary dance began at Bennington College through diverse and active participation in the dance community there. Kaya participated in numerous performances each term choreographed by both students and faculty, including pieces by Dana Reitz, Gwen Welliver, Daniel Roberts, and Kota Yamazaki. She has performed and collaborated numerous times with the other Three Planes members Finn Murphy and Emma Villavecchia during and after college. Her varied performance experiences complement the creation of her own choreographic work, which is framed and augmented by her studies in ecology and visual art. Her creative work has also been influenced by internships with independent choreographers, dance companies, and other arts-based organizations around the United States and abroad. Together these mixed experiences and interests have helped refine her work across disciplines and build an aesthetic focused on detail, clarity, and delicacy.

After many years studying dance in Barcelona, Emma received her formal education at Bennington College (Vermont). There she performed in new works by Gwen Welliver, Kota Yamazaki, Daniel Roberts and Susan Sgorbati. Additionally, she regularly performed in student work and presented her own choreography, including a collaborative duet with Finn Murphy for his graduation project. In 2012, her work was screened at the Utah Dance Film Festival, and in 2013 she produced a series of short dance films for Curt Ficcions festival. Additionally, she has presented live work at Cocoon Theater (New York), Centre Cívic El Sortidor (Barcelona) and Festival Sismògraf (Olot). Her last project, “Vicariously Vital”, is an interdisciplinary duet between a dancer and a drummer that explores the concepts of ‘vitality’ and ‘climax’, as well as their contagiousness. Her collaboration with Kaya Lovestand was a key aspect in the creation of this work.
